San Fernando Valley JACL’s Suzume no Gakkou summer camp visited Little Tokyo on June 19. Some 40 kids ranging in age from 7 to 12 (2ndto 6thgrade) and more than 40 chaperones took the Metro Red Line to the Gold Line to reach Japantown. The field trip included a tour of the Japanese American National Museum. Above, docent Helen Yasuda shows students a prewar Japanese language school classroom, part of JANM’s standing exhibition, “Common Ground: The Heart of Community.” Below, docent June Aoki shows drawings of internment camp life while leading students through a barrack from Heart Mountain. In addition to explaining the artifacts, the docents discussed their own experiences before, during and after World War II. (Photos by J.K. YAMAMOTO/Rafu Shimpo)
